There has been a lot of talk refering to a CPU upgrade (ie. Omnibook 6000 processor upgrade). Right now I am operating at 600MHz (same as the 6000's) and have purchase a 1 GHz chip, it has exactly the same specifications as the 600MHz chip. I haven't install it yet but from there earlier article it sounds like it may risky to do so (ie. 850 MHz max.). I have some Arctic Silver III thermal paste if that would help. Is it impossible to upgrade to 1 GHz? Should I change my DIP switch settings?

The XE2-DC (F20xx) was the only XE2 series P3 Speedstep m/b with a max CPU speed of 600MHz. 1GHz is extremely optimistic for a notebook m/b that was only ever designed for 600MHz in the last model of the ageing XE2 range.
If it even boots, it is highly unlikely that onboard devices, the chipset and memory will be able handle the 1GHz CPU. Not to mention potential heat problems. You won't find any documentation for such non standard mods.
Using the 6000 as a reference is not a good idea as the main similarity between the two is the HP badge. Have a look at the thread on the OB6000 CPU upgrades. The very first "A" series was sold with 700MHz P3's. I've tried 800 and even 850MHz with the A series with some success - but not in all cases. Only the final C version of the m/b had the 1GHz CPU.
FWIW - Might be a better idea to sell the XE2 in working order, and look for a used, fairly recent 800/850MHz notebook that may have a chance of using the 1GHz CPU.
Or even going for a brand new 1 - 1.2GHz notebook. Never been cheaper.
And if you are still game to try it in the XE2, please let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice. Could I still upgrade to a 700 or 800MHz? Or, am I stuck with 600MHz and have to upgrade the notebook.

If you can get hold of a 700 or 800, (700's quite cheap on eBay) it might be worth a try as the core voltages are similar, if not the same, to your 600MHz P3 and there is a fair chance of success. Worst case is you will be greeted with a blank screen.
Don't mess with the DIP switch settings tho, as these should be the same in that speed range.
Chase up an XE3 manual first to help in disassembly, I've seen a few links in here.

I have successfully upgrade my Omnibook XE2-DC to 800Mhz (formally 600Mhz). I have a 1Ghz but when it was installed it was running at 800Mhz. I know it is the voltage, but could I change the DIP switch setting (1-6 setting), does anyone know the answer to this???

If you have matched everything up correctly, you should be able to run at 1ghz. Is the 1ghz a Pentium III mobile? Or a celeron? Is the bus speed 100 mhz? Many of the high speed chips only go at 133 mhz bus. But then you'd be at 750mhz... Have you tried using a cpu clocking program? You may be running at 1ghz but the bios can only detect up to 800 mhz. Or is it a speedstep that drops when not plugged into AC power? I would be interested in which processor type you used in your upgrade, as I am looking to do the same. Also, have you tried (careful!) flashing the xe3 bios onto your xe2? Not the best idea, but the differences I've picked out are different video card (AGP on the Xe3) and bus speed on some (133 on the Xe3). However, there is a business version of the Xe3 that ran off a 100 mhz bus Celeron, may be worth trying if you have 2 identical Xe's to work with (in case the upgrade fails). Bios is by Phoenix on both. I haven't found out if they use the same chipsets or not to control the bus, but if so, it would be possible to run your xe2 at 133mhz bus, then potentially run a much faster processor. Anyone please let me know if you get this working. Good luck!

Warning! Don't do the above bios swaps unless you REALLY know what you're doing! You would most likely not be able to boot after doing such a swap. Most likely, a bios editor would be required to ensure that your hardware was supported. If the Phoenix bios is backwards compatable with the xe2 chipset and video card, it would work. Does anyone here have that information? Please post if you do.
