1. It's true that there is such a rumor. Pity though, I think we should comprehend that because developing these custom TPs is really very exhausting. These motherboards cannot be produced one by one manually, and they must be produced going with mass-producting procedures. So there will be many difficulties and problems when designing the motherboards, to fit with the assembly line, such as where one of the resistances should be placed or which one should be soldered after another one. If we were making or soldering the motherboards manually ourselves, we won't consider about these, but in mass-production, they should be considered about. So as the quality controlling and taking responsibilities for mistakes. When getting into this period, the developers who taking responsibility for several hundred thousands dollars won't decide anything easily, because they won't have many times to correct mistakes as they wish.
But those are not the most disappointing things. What the most disappointing is that there are still many people who cannot understand this, and they start to fire out questions such as why no VGA/DP or other support, why no this and why no that, is it really difficult to add an ** support or you developers are just lazy/mammonish/stupid, and some of them even worse, start to swear. Maybe product developing exhausted them, though, they didn't give up, but the incomprehension really drove them into desapir.
2. Several months ago, there were arguments among 51nb forum if X220/X230 should be re-customized. Some people provided the same reason as you, these models are pretty popular among the TP users. But frankly, when Team HOPE started to re-customize T43/X61/T61, the 4:3 screen is one of the most important reason to force them to do so. If you do like TPs and the 6th, 7th or 8th Gen Intel Core-i*s, without other request, the X260, X270 and X280 would be enough. Why should they re-customize these models? On the other hand, the 2nd or 3rd Gen Intel Core-i*s doesn't lose much comparing with the 6th and 7th, so it won't be so meaningful to develop a new motherboards to replace them.
Buying X270 or replacing the X230 keyboard with X220 keyboard will be better choice. Afterall, every project of custom motherboard is related to much money and mass-production. It's not so easy to get started or to be gave up.
3. Though started from interest, since every project is related to much money, it DOES be very important to collect enough funds to get the mass-production started, so the demands are important, too. If they produced these motherboards manually, surely they didn't need demands, but without mass-producting, how can we consumers get these motherboards? There was a project to re-customize X301 in 51nb forum, but failed at last. A lot of people shouted and supported to make a project for X301 before the project starts, and finally, when the project got started and got to the time to raise funds, only about 10 people raised their money, HOPE himself included. This really became a joke.
So demands are needed, indeed. |
