Getting Started Building a DIY Projector
Okay. So now that you have decided to add a DIY video projector to your home theater, what next? Don't worry - it's easier than you might think. Take a deep breath, and prepare for a 10 minute read.
The first thing you'll need to do is simply to assess what tools you have. My motto is "the more, the merrier", but a DIY projector is actually very simple to build, so you won't need much. There are basically two paths that you can take depending upon your tool situation: 1) Build everything from scratch or 2) purchase ready-to-assemble parts from the DIY Projector Company. Either way is fine, but you'll probably save a little money if you've got the tools and skills to make some very simple cuts in half-inch composite wood.
I own a hammer and some screwdrivers, is that sufficient?
Sure - even if you're not Mr. (or Mrs.) Handy, you'll still be able to build a DIY projector just fine. You definitely will need a couple of screwdrivers, which you could purchase for less than $10 if you don't already have some. It is also a good idea to have a drill with a few small-medium sized bits, but this isn't absolutely necessary.
In addition to the parts that you would normally need to acquire, you will also want to purchase a projector enclosure kit from our online store. This package deal includes panels of MDF composite material that you will assemble to make up your projector housing. Normally that requires an inexpensive drill and screwdriver, but if you don't have a drill then you can request to have the enclosure drilled ahead of time for a small fee.
I've got more tools than the average contractor, give me some wood to cut!
If you have a power saw and some of the essential hand tools, then you're good to go for building your projector from scratch. You'll need a sheet of 0.5" MDF board or some plywood. These materials are heavier than necessary, but allow for a very simple construction without the use of any unusual fasteners. The instructions for cutting your materials to make your own enclosure are found within the normal instructions here.
Okay, so I have my projector housing figured out, what next?
Now that you have your projector housing planned out, it's time to get the rest of your projector goods together before you can build your video projector. The instructions and design notes for each projector design offered at the DIY Projector Company can be found here. In this section, you will also find a list of necessary items for each projector design. In general, every DIY projector needs an overhead projector style fresnel lens, a projection lens (a "triplet" is recommended), a light source, and an LCD panel. There are plenty of variations on each of the designs out there, but the same basic items are required for each projector. Many items are available elsewhere on the net in such places as eBay, but you will probably find that it is both more convenient and a lot cheaper to purchase from our online projector equipment store.
That's all . . . surprised? It only took 5-10 minutes of reading and now you're prepared to go build your projector! Once you have all of the parts necessary, it should only take you about an hour to build the projector initially, but expect to spend more time calibrating it until your complete satisfied that you have the best image possible. Depending upon where you purchase the parts required and what parts you may already have, a typical DIY projector cost between $300-500, though some have been made for less, and some have certainly been made for more.
