Tips for Running Windows Vista on a ThinkPad T42
This post may end up being used more for people at the company I work for, but just in case others need some help on running Windows Vista on their T42's (or most laptops), here are some suggestions.
- While Windows Vista Beta 2 does support upgrading from Windows XP, you probably don't want to do this. While it is a good test of Windows Vista, your machine will be more stable if you don't upgrade. Clean installations always run better!
- Windows Vista will detect about 90% of the hardware in the T42. From my experience, it does not have the drivers for the fingerprint scanner, ATI video card, modem, on-screen displays for volume controls, and the wireless management controls (Fn+F5).
- As the ATI video card in the T42 is not supported under the Windows Vista Display Driver Module (WVDDM), you will not be able to take advantage of the Aero interface and the visual effects. If you run the Windows Vista Ultimate Extras component (also Windows Update), you may be able to install a video driver for the ATI card. You don't really need the ATI driver if it is detected. As it does not conform the WVDDM, the driver will run in kernel mode instead of user mode and can cause the system to crash - especially when video segments are pulled up in some web pages and applications. Stick with the VGA driver as it can provide the full resolution the monitor supports (I have used it up to 1920x1200 screens), 32-bit color, and so forth. I hope ATI has a better driver soon, but nothing for now. Keep in mind, though, if you stick with the VGA driver, you can't put the machine to sleep. You can only hibernate.
- The IBM Keyboard Utility (used to map a Windows key and more) does not run correctly in Windows Vista. In Windows XP, the first user on the machine and the system tools all run as User 0. Windows Vista has changed this so the system processes run as User 0 and the first user logged in runs as User 1. As such, the IBM Keyboard tool tries to run as User 0 and User 1 cannot access the utility.
- I have tested most of the Windows XP drivers on the Lenovo website for the T42 and some seem to work. The keyboard tool to provide an on-screen display of activity seems to work. The wireless card management utility has not worked in previous builds (haven't tried this one on Beta 2 as I don't need it anymore), the fingerprint driver will install, but isn't used correctly, and the modem drivers will work.
- If you have a USB thumb drive with at least 64 MB or more of free space, Windows Vista can use this through the Windows Vista ReadyBoost utility to improve overall performance.
- When the Windows Vista System Performance Center runs to grade your machine, you will most likely get a score of 1 or 2 (depends on RAM, free disk space, etc.). This is expected as the video card pulls the machine down.
- The BitLocker component will not work on the T42 as it requires a TPM module revision not present in the T42.
- If your company uses a non-trusted SSL certificate for Exchange, Outlook 2007 will not be able to connect to the email server. You will need to add this to the Trusted Root Certificate Store in Windows Vista (you will need to do this in the certificates MMC). This will also correct the IE7 issue where the address bar turns red when visiting things like Outlook Web Access.
- The Run option is no longer in the Start Menu. You can fix this by right-click the Start Button (Windows Orb) and then customizing your Start Menu.
