System Architecture
| | ![](http://h20181.www2.hp.com/plmcontent/NACSC/Notebooks/15498_032805/images/ui_totop1.gif) | The Tablet PC uses the Transmeta TM5800 CPU, which includes the North Bridge. The North Bridge connects to the South Bridge via a PCI bus, and supports the following:
- Memory
- USB controller
- Graphics controller
- PC Cardbus
- Mini PCI
- Ethernet
The South Bridge is the VIA 686B chip, and supports the following:
- Audio controller
- Hard disk drive
- H8 controller
- Digitizer
CPU Subsystem
| | ![](http://h20181.www2.hp.com/plmcontent/NACSC/Notebooks/15498_032805/images/ui_totop1.gif) |
The CPU is the Transmeta TM5800 running at 1GHz. The CPU is a Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW) based Reduced Instruction Set (RISC) engine that uses code-morphing software (CMS) to translate x86-based instructions into its native instruction set. To accomplish this, the CMS is placed in the parallel BIOS ROM. Part of the total system memory is also allocated for the CMS. The amount of system memory allocated for CMS is configured through a 2Kb Configuration ROM.
The CPU has a feature called LongRun that runs in CMS and dynamically adjusts the CPU frequency and voltage to minimize power consumption.
Memory Subsystem
| | ![](http://h20181.www2.hp.com/plmcontent/NACSC/Notebooks/15498_032805/images/ui_totop1.gif) | The Tablet PC supports two different memory ports:
- Double Data Rate (DDR) port ?/font> provides a 256MB DDR SODIMM. The DDR memory runs at a minimum speed of 100MHz (DDR200). This memory slot is configured at the factory and is not user upgradeable.
- Single Data Rate (SDR) port ?/font> supports all standard PC133 SODIMM sizes from 64MB to 512MB. The SDR memory runs at 133MHz. This memory slot is for user upgradeable memory.
Each memory slot is controlled by a separate bus so that system speed is not compromised by adding PC133 memory modules to the tablet PC.
The following table shows the possible memory combinations for the tablet PC:
DDR SODIMM | SDR SODIMM | Total Memory | 256MB | 0MB | 256MB | 256MB | 64MB | 320MB | 256MB | 128MB | 384MB | 256MB | 256MB | 512MB | 256MB | 512MB | 768MB | If non-compliant memory is installed in the factory DDR slot, the system will not boot. If non-compliant memory is installed in the user-installable SDR slot, the system will not recognize the memory.
Graphics Subsystem
| | ![](http://h20181.www2.hp.com/plmcontent/NACSC/Notebooks/15498_032805/images/ui_totop1.gif) | The nVidia GeForce2Go (NV11M-100) graphics controller is supported by the North Bridge on a PCI link (AGP is not supported). The controller provides 16MB of frame buffer DDR 200 memory.
The controller supports rotation in 90o increments to provide portrait and landscape viewing. Simultaneous display with standard VGA connection is also supported.
The following table describes the resolution support for the tablet PC:
Display Resolution | Colors | XGA TFT | CRT | CRT Refresh Rate Choices | 640x480 | 256, 64K, 16M | Yes | Yes | 60, 70, 72, 75, 85, 90, 100, 120, 160Hz | 800x600 | 256, 64K, 16M | Yes | Yes | 60, 70, 72, 75, 85, 90, 100, 120, 160Hz | 1024x768 | 256, 64K, 16M | Yes | Yes | 60, 70, 72, 75, 85, 90, 100, 120, 160Hz | 1280x1024 | 256, 64K, 16M | No | Yes | 60, 70, 72, 75, 85, 90, 100, 120, 160Hz | 1600x1400 | 256, 64K, 16M | No | Yes | 60, 70, 72, 75, 85, 90, 100, 120, 160Hz |
